Clarington was formed in 1972 through the amalgamation of the Town for Bowmanville, Village of Newcastle, and Townships of Clarke and Darlington.
In 1993, it took a new name, merging the former Township names of Clarke and Darlington into Clarington.

Oshawa started as a transfer point for the fur trade. In fact, the name of the city comes from an Ojibwa word meaning "a crossing place".
Native trappers would trade furs to the voyageurs to be transported south by canoe.

In 1834 Lake Scugog was created by a dam and flooding created an island known as Scugog Island which became the earliest formation of Scugog Township. It would later grow with the amalgamation of Scugog, Reach, Cartwright and Port Perry
