Samuel de Champlain is one of the first western explorers to travel through the area that would become Peterborough County. The Chemong Road which travels from the lake of the same name to the Otonabee River follows approximately the same path as the portage trail that Champlain’s expedition took.

In 1820, Richard Birdsall completed a survey of the land in what would become Ashphodel-Norwood and noted an abundance of trilliums. These flowers reminded him of the asphodel flowers that covered the land in his hometown in England and decided to name the township after those flowers.
Cavan Monghan has been a filming location for several well known movies and TV shows including Anne with an E, Sunshine Sketches of a Little Town, The Music Man, and Ice Princess.
In 1896, a man named Patrick George Towns opened a general store. For the next 120 years, the store continued to be operated by the same family. In 2017 it reopened as Towns and Leahy Merchantile and Deli, but was destroyed by a fire in 2018. Time will tell if Douro-Dummer will once again be served by the Towns’ General Store.
On August 31, 1961, four men armed with revolvers and an M1 carbine rifle entered the TD Bank in Havelock. Soon after, the robbers emergeed, joining a fifth waiting outside in a Buick and fled with $230,000. By the end of the day, after a car chase and shootout with the police, the robbers managed to escape into the nearby forests. Four days later, the search team of 75 Ontario Provincial Police offerices and several civilian supporters managed to find the men. The Havelock Bank Robbery makes Havelock-Belmont-Methuen home to one of the biggest bank robberies in Canadian history.
North Kawartha is home to Petroglyphs Provincial Park, site of the largest collection of First Nations petroglyphs in Ontario and a National Historic Site. The images are from the pre-Columbian era and were kept hidden from non-indigenous people until accidentally found by a prospector in 1954.
Otonabee-South Monaghan is the location of Serpent Mounds Park, operated by the Hiawatha First Nation until 2009 when it close. The park is named for the historical burial mounds built by the indigneous people. The largest of the nine mounds has a serpent spared appearance and is the only one of its kind in Canada.
Like many cities, Peterborough has had different nicknames throughout its history. One such name is “The Electric City” because it was the first city in Canada to use electric streetlights. Other notabile innovations include the Peterborough Lift Lock, which for many years were the highest hydraulic boat lift in the world.
The former Cavan Township became part of Cavan-Millbrook-North Monaghan Township through amalgamation on January 1, 1998. In 2007, the township was renamed Cavan Monaghan.
The former Dummer Township became part of Douro-Dummer Township through amalgamation on January 1, 1998.
The former Harvey Township became part of the Municipality of Trent Lakes through amalgamation on January 1, 1998.
The former South Monaghan Township became part of the Township of Otonabee-South Monaghan through amalgamation on January 1, 1998.
