The former Victoria County was home to 19 townships and incorporated communities before all of these municipal governments were amalgamated into the single-tier Kawartha Lakes in 2001.

The Tragically Hip song Bobcaygeon is associated with the community, though tragically, it was not written about the community. Instead, they chose the name to complete a rhyme.
