Lanark County is located on traditional Algonquin territory. The first European settlements didn’t begin until around 1816 and nearly all of them are named after Britsh public and military figures from the early era of the settlements.
Carleton Place’s town hall officially opened on October 25, 1897 on land that was purchased for $3,000. It’s Richardson Romanesque architecture was popular at the time and includes cut limestone, a steep pitched roof, towers and turrets. Notably, the building also has a pressed metal ceiling which sets it apart from other buildings of a similar age.

Visitors to Smiths Falls won’t find a waterfall anywhere within the town. Early accounts of the community suggest that the area once had a stretch of whitewater rapids where the water of the Rideau River dropped 36 feet in less than a quarter mile. However during construction of the Rideau Canal, the falls were diverted to accommodate the new canal and three lock stations. Today, only gentle rapids and the Town’s name are what remain of the falls.
