Hastings was named by Henry Fowlds who purchased a grist mill in 1851 and named the area around it after Flora Muir Campbell wife of the many-titled British aristocrat Francis Rawdon-Hastings, Baron Rawdon, Earl of Moira who became Marquess of Hastings in Sussex, England in 1817. The English name Hastings comes from an Old English word Hæstingas meaning “the followers of Hæsta”, one of the Anglo-Saxon tribes in Britain.
