Niagara’s Coat of Arms are PACKED with meaning. The lines on the shield represent the Niagara Escarpment and Welland Canal. The lion and eagle on either side are a nod to General Brock and the Battle of Queenston Heights. The lion at the top is holding a native ceremonial pipe in honour of the original inhabitants.
In 1866 during the Fenian Raids, an army of 1500 Fenian Brotherhood (Irish republicans) occupied and held the town as they fought a series of skirmishes with the Canadian militia before eventually defeating them during the Battle of Fort Erie. The Fenians subsequently fled to the US, fearing the arrival of British reinforcements.
In 1859, Grimsby became home to Canada's first 'Chautauqua" organization: a Methodist adult education and social movement that functioned as a summer camp with games, entertainment, and lectures on religious values. In 1909 the camp was sold to become an amusement park. By 1950, the park was closed and the land was sold to developers who built cottages. Today you can walk through Grimsby to see the many brightly coloured gingerbread style cottages that remain.
Lincoln is home to The Owl Foundation: a non-profit dedicated to helping injured owls, which was founded by Lincoln resident Kathering McKeever, “the Own Lady of Canada” who has received the Order of Canada for her work rescuing, rehabilitating, and breeding owls.
Niagara Falls has a spectacular waterfall.
They also have spectacular Black history. ~10% of early settlers were Black Loyalists. It was an Underground Railroad destination. One of the first BME churches for African-Canadians formed here.

Early settlers of Pelham include members of Butler's Rangers. If you follow me you've heard me mention them before. This was a Loyalist regiment many of whom were Black Loyalists.

Before 1845 when the town first incorporated, the name and spelling of St. Catharines was not standard, sometimes spelled with an “er” instead of “ar” and other times with an apostrophe. Because of this, it’s unclear which Catharine the city is named after. It is speculated to be Catherine Butler, Catherine Askin Hamilton, or Catharine Rodman Predergast Merritt all of whom were early settlers and spouses of key political figures in the area.
Thorold is named after Sir John Thorold, a representative in the British House of Commons who represented Lincolnshire and opposed the war with America. Although now part of Niagara Region, Thorold used to be part of Lincoln County and was settled by United Empire Loyalists, which is how the name came to be connected to the lord representing Lincolnshire.

Wainfleet's name is derived from the Anglo-Saxon "wain" meaning wagon, and "fleet" meaning "a river". Together, "a river a wagon can pass through".
This nomenclature is reflected in the coat of arms depicting a river with a wagon wheel.
The Welland Canal is unsurprisingly located in Welland, ON. The city started as a shantytown that grew around a wooden aqueduct that served as the first canal.
West Lincoln is a part of the former Lincoln County which was named after Lincolnshire in England. Lincolnshire being a Latinized name of the Brittonic “Lindon” or “Lindum” Colonia, a Roman Legionary Fortress likely founded during the reign of Emperor Nero between 58 and 68 AD.
