Prescott and Russel is home to the Alfred Bog; the largest, highest quality bog in Southern Ontario. The bog once covered 26,000 acres before being reduced to only 12,000 acres by early development in the area including the removal of peat as a fuel source. Conservation measures were put in place in the 1980s and the bog has been designated as an Area of Natural and Scientific Interest by the Ontario MInistry of Natural Resources.
The administrative seat of Champlain is Vankleek Hills which still has many of the original buildings from the 1890s which feature intricate wood carvings around the eaves called “gingerbread”. Because of the over 250 buildings with this detailing the community was named “the gingerbread capital of Ontario” in 2003.
