The earliest western settlements in NEMI grew around the lumber industry. One of the first known traders in the settlement was an Anishinaabe man named George Abotossaway who sold wood as fuel to ships on Lake Huron.
Central Manitoulin hosts a few “largest in the world” geographic features. First we should recognize that Manitoulin Island is itself the world’s largest island in a freshwater lake. In turn, Central Manitoulin’s Lake Manitou is the world’s largest lake on an island in a freshwater lake. But wait, it gets more exciting. The third largest lake on Manitoulin Island is Lake Mindemoya within which lies Treasure Island which at only 0.4 square kilometres is the world’s largest island in a lake on an island, in a lake.
