The Township of Bonfield has many residents but one of the most famous is Jake. Jake is a cat who has 28 toes and is Guiness World Record holder for the cat with the most toes. I admit this isn’t a fact about the township, but I love cats!
The community of Corbell in East Ferris was the birthplace of the famous Dionne quintuplets who became famous as the first quintuplets known to have survived infancy - in fact they all survived to adulthood after being used by the Ontario government as a profit generating tourist attraction.
The name Mattawa comes from an Ojibwa word meaning “Meeting of the Waters” which refers to the location of the town which was built at the mouth of the Mattawa River where it meets the Ottawa River. The town was also where Dr. Saint-Firmin Monestime became the first Black mayor elected in Canada in 1963.
During the Cold War, the Canadian Air Force established a base in North Bay. It became a NORAD operations centre and it's role continues to this day including monitoring of space through Canada’s military satellite “Sapphire”.

The Temagami Fire Tower on Caribou Mountain in Temagami is a 100 ft tall lookout tower that was last used in the 1970s as a firewater tower. The tower is the second one in that location with the original only being 45 feet. The tower was last used in the 1970s are a firewatch point, but visitors today can still climb to get a view of the area.
